There is no denying of Thailands popularity as one of the top wedding destinations in the world. As a tropical paradise, the country is teeming with natural wonders endemic to the tropics such as pristine beaches, magical mountains, lovely hamlets, majestic temples and virgin jungles. All these amazing wonders provide endless possibilities for the couple in terms of wedding location, honeymoon activities and type of wedding ceremony to follow.  But, that isnt all.  Adding to the countrys natural charm is the perennially smiling locals with their rich and well-preserved culture and traditions thriving side by side with development and modernity a common sight in the key cities of the country. Truly, the Land of Smiles has the necessary ingredients for a truly memorable wedding ceremony. Perhaps this is the main reason foreigners flock to Thailand to get married.

At the same time, getting married in Thailand proves to be a practical decision among couples especially when it comes to the legal aspect of marriage. The reason is that marriage in Thailand, as long as its properly registered at the local district office also known as Amphur, is recognized worldwide. This only means that your marriage in Thailand is legally binding not only in Thailand but in your home country as well.    And for your information, the marriage registration procedure is very simple and straightforward.

A foreigner who would like to get married in Thailand should furnish the following documents to be able to proceed with the marriage registration:

·       Affirmation of Freedom to Marry This is to be obtained at the foreigners embassy in Thailand

·       Proof of dissolution of previous marriages i.e. divorce certificate or death certificate of spouse

·       Copy of your Passport

The Thai fiancé meanwhile should furnish the following documents during the marriage registration:

  • Thai ID card/ Passport
  • House Registration Certificate also known as Tabien Baan
  • Proof of dissolution of previous marriages either divorce certificate or death certificate of spouse
  • Certificate of Changing name (if applicable)
  • Medical Certificate (if she just divorced or widowed for not more than 310 days) to verify that she is not pregnant with her former husband at the time of marriage registration.

The marriage registration process is pretty simple. The foreign fiancé has to procure the affirmation of freedom to marry at his respective embassy in Thailand. This document has to be translated into Thai language then legalized at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. When these procedures are finished, the married couple has to appear at the local district office with their documents to register their marriage. The registrar will issue a Marriage Certificate once the married is consummated.
